Tanya Freeman, Esq.

Tanya L. Freeman, Esq. is an accomplished attorney, executive leader, and strategic advisor whose career spans law, business, healthcare, and public service. With more than two decades of professional experience, she is recognized for her ability to lead through complexity, build strong institutions, and create meaningful opportunities for individuals, businesses, and communities.

Tanya serves as Chief Strategy and Policy Officer of the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, where she leads initiatives focused on economic opportunity, access to capital, strategic partnerships, public policy, and the growth of Black-owned businesses. Her work supports the Chamber’s broader mission of strengthening the economic position of Black businesses and expanding their access to corporate, governmental, and community-based opportunities.

She is also the Managing Partner of Tanya Freeman Law, where she represents clients in complex family law matters, including divorce, custody, support, interstate relocation, and domestic violence proceedings. Known for her disciplined advocacy, strategic judgment, and compassionate leadership, Tanya is frequently entrusted with high-conflict and high-asset matters requiring both discretion and precision.

Before entering the legal profession, Tanya spent more than fifteen years in banking and insurance, developing significant financial and operational expertise. That experience continues to inform her work as an attorney, executive, and advisor, particularly in matters involving business interests, asset distribution, organizational strategy, and long-term planning.

Tanya previously served as Chair of the Board of Directors of University Hospital in Newark from 2018 through 2025, following four years of service as a Board Member and Chair of the Governance, Ethics and Legal Committee. During her tenure, she helped guide the institution through a period of significant transformation, strengthening governance, restoring public confidence, and advancing a long-term vision for equitable and high-quality healthcare.

Her leadership and service have been recognized by numerous professional and civic organizations. Her honors include the Public Interest Award from the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, recognition as one of BINJE’s Best Black Business Leaders, ROI-NJ Influencers in Health Care, ROI-NJ Influencers Women in Business, the Essex County Bar Association’s Professional Lawyer of the Year, and the New Jersey Law Journal’s Diversity Award.

Tanya is a graduate of Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center and Caldwell University, earning both degrees cum laude. She also completed the Mediation and Conflict Management Certificate Program at Harvard Law School.
